New England skipper Ben Long used his first interview since taking the role to declare: “We are going to be hard to beat at miniEURO2014!”

Speaking to the UK Socca Association today, Ben – who made his England debut in the clash with Bulgaria last year – admitted he was delighted to be the man chosen to lead his country: “It was an extremely proud moment for both me and my family,” he said.

As well as the appointment of Ben as the new skipper, England have put the new management structure of Paul Darke, Mark Staines and Gary Thomas in place and Ben, says he’s been very impressed by what he’s seen from them so far: “The management team seem to have a lot of new ideas and plans for the upcoming year,” he explained.

He also admitted that these new ideas had brought a new dynamism to the squad: “The setup is very professional and I think that ethos can only spread throughout the group which is only going to improve us as a team and make us better and more equipped for the miniEURO.”

And like everyone else, new skipper Ben – who will be leading his team in the friendlies against Wales and Scotland at the UK 6 a side Championships and against Ireland in July at their version – is looking forward to the European Championships this autumn – and is heading there in confident mood: “I've been very impressed with the standard of players this year we seem to have a good mix of characters and types of player which will make us hard to beat. I think if we keep working hard and prepare properly for the tournament we can do big things,” he insisted.
